How we compare Amazon and Shopify

Both figures come from the same calculation: order revenue minus commission on whichever base the platform actually uses, minus per-order and payment fees, minus the consumption tax sitting inside your price where that applies, minus your product cost and shipping. No midpoints are invented — where a marketplace publishes a band, you see the band.

Referral fee 5–15% by category, £0.25 minimum. 2026 cuts: Clothing 8%→5% for items ≤£15, 15%→10% for £15–£20; new Home band 8% ≤£20; Grocery/supplements 8%→5% ≤£10. FBA fulfilment not included — enter as shipping. 20% UK VAT on fees is reclaimable if VAT-registered (memo). No marketplace commission. Shopify Payments 2.0% + £0.25 (Basic, UK online cards — confirmed 2026). You bring your own traffic — ad CAC matters most here. You charge & remit 20% UK VAT (inside the price shown).

FAQ

Is Amazon or Shopify cheaper for sellers?

On a £24.99 product costing £6.00 with £4.00 shipping, Shopify nets about £10.08 per unit versus £7.08 on Amazon — a gap of roughly £3.00. That ordering can flip with a different price or category, so run your own numbers before committing.

What commission does each charge?

Amazon charges 15% in the general category and Shopify charges 0%. Both vary by category — the full table on this page lists every one.

Do the fees include tax?

Yes. In United Kingdom your listed price is VAT-inclusive, so the tax inside the price is removed from revenue before margin is calculated.

Can I sell on both?

Yes, and most established sellers do — the point of comparing is knowing which one deserves your ad budget and your best pricing. The Goal Planner can split a monthly profit target across both channels at once.
